15,000 hours of preparation and six weeks of massive renovation works… Brussels Airport’s principal and longest (3.3 km) runway is ready for the next 15 years! The renovation was necessary to guarantee safe landings and take-offs in the future.

The works were, to say the least, very extensive. The upper asphalt layers were milled and rebuilt, the runway lighting system including all cabling was replaced. In places where it was not yet the case, energy-efficient LED lighting replaced the traditional lights, etc. The renovation works in numbers? 35 people were ready to manage the construction site at any time, at peak times 8,000 tons of asphalt was placed in 12 hours with 30 pavers and 100 trucks. This represents some 270,000 m² of asphalt (± 40 soccer fields). The runway and taxiways were equipped with some 2,000 lights, 320 km of cabling, 10 km of trenches, 7.4 km of drainage channels and 1.4 km of new sewer pipes.

None of this would have been possible without the excellent cooperation with Willemen Groep and Mobix Stevens NV.
